Jacobs Engineering win contract in Malaysia

Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. (NYSE:JEC) announced it has been awarded two contracts by Hyundai Engineering Co., Ltd. (HEC) to provide engineering services for the balance of plant facilities and the cooling water intake and discharge system respectively for a 2,000MW ultra-super-critical, coal-fired power generation project in Port Dickson, about 60 kilometers south of Kuala Lumpur in Malaysia.

The Jimah East Power project involves building two units of 1,000MW power plant. Most notably, the plants are expected to be highly efficient and environmentally friendly by minimizing greenhouse gas emissions with ultra-super-critical pressure generation.

Jacobs’ role includes the detailed civil and structural design for the balance of plant (BOP) facilities and for the cooling water intake and discharge system. The civil scope comprises bulk earthworks, storm water drainage, underground sewer utilities, fencing and coordination of various underground services, while the structural scope covers foundation design for all BOP components and design for the cooling water intake and discharge system components. Services also include geotechnical design and local authority submissions, as well as construction phase services.

The project is expected to be commissioned in two stages, circa 2018 and 2019.

In making the announcement, Jacobs Group Vice President Peter Brettell said, “Jacobs has extensive experience in providing services for power projects throughout the region. We’re delighted to contribute our experience to this important project for Malaysia as it continues to expand its power generation capacity to service its rapidly growing economy and strengthen the national grid.”

If so, what will they be giving up in your present home and will they be able to continue with their career in your new home? You will need to check whether a separate visa is required for your partner to work or if your visa gives that right. If they are unable to work you will need to decide on the effect on your finances and what alternatives are available to give a fulfilling life (home business, training, voluntary work).

Are you taking family with you?

Moving with family raises many exciting opportunities, but also can create challenges. The HSBC Expat Explorer survey indicates that expat kids can take six months to settle in to their new country (see article). Getting young or even older children to prepare to move and leave their friends and family behind can be a challenge and should be thought through.

The options for education is another area that needs to be thought through.

Moving your child to a new country with a different education system can be a great opportunity to broaden their experience, but if they are close to key exams the timing can make this inadvisable. If you do take your family with you, it is important to decide between joining the local school system or choosing an international school.
