Gulf firms invited for Tahiti project

French Polynesia has sought expressions of interest from firms in the Middle East about delevoping a hospitality project in Tahiti, estimated to cost between $1-2bn.

The overseas collectivity is implementing a policy to revitalise tourism in the island, which in the first instance, has lead to the formation of the Tahiti Mahana Beach Project in Punaauia.

The project involves the building of hotels, houses/apartments, a shopping centre, a museum, a casino, designing of marinas for luxury yachts/boats, and leisure areas (golf course, water activities, traditional/cultural activities) spread over a 50 hectare site.

Last year three teams of designers presented development projects to the government of French Polynesia. The masterplans produced may provide a basis for negotiations with candidates.

Most of the work will be carried out and financied by the successful candidate who will be granted a very-long lease and operating right. Measures to support this type of investment have already been made by French Polynesia.

The different development operations onvolved in the project may be carried out independently of each other and the final implementation strategy will be discussed with the candidates during the negotiations.

Special attention will be given to the economic and social consequences of the operation as envisaged by the candidates.

The project is being overseen by Tahiti Nui Planning and Department (TNAD).

The deadline for expressions of interest is March 2015

If so, what will they be giving up in your present home and will they be able to continue with their career in your new home? You will need to check whether a separate visa is required for your partner to work or if your visa gives that right. If they are unable to work you will need to decide on the effect on your finances and what alternatives are available to give a fulfilling life (home business, training, voluntary work).

Are you taking family with you?

Moving with family raises many exciting opportunities, but also can create challenges. The HSBC Expat Explorer survey indicates that expat kids can take six months to settle in to their new country (see article). Getting young or even older children to prepare to move and leave their friends and family behind can be a challenge and should be thought through.

The options for education is another area that needs to be thought through.

Moving your child to a new country with a different education system can be a great opportunity to broaden their experience, but if they are close to key exams the timing can make this inadvisable. If you do take your family with you, it is important to decide between joining the local school system or choosing an international school.

Where will you be living?

Whether you will be living in a house or apartment, furnished or unfurnished, these decisions will affect what you need to take with you.
