CIMIC’s Leighton Asia wins A$470m sewerage system project

CIMIC Group company, Leighton Asia, has been awarded a Deep Tunnel Sewerage System Phase 2 contract by PUB, Singapore’s national water agency. Revenue to Leighton Asia, which is part of CIMIC Group construction company CPB Contractors, is approximately A$470 million.

Construction is scheduled to commence in October 2017 and complete by mid-2023. CIMIC Group Chief Executive Officer Adolfo Valderas said: “The award of one of the major tunnelling packages for the Deep Tunnel Sewerage System in Singapore demonstrates CIMIC’s diverse capability, drawing together the expertise of Leighton Asia and CPB Contractors to deliver large and critical infrastructure assets.

“It is our privilege to contribute our innovative and cost-effective design and construction methodologies to support Singapore’s continued growth, and fulfil the quality and sustainability expectations of its people and communities.”

CPB Contractors and Leighton Asia Managing Director Juan Santamaria said: “Our team has extensive international experience in delivering major tunnelling and complex energy and resources infrastructure, as well as decades of local experience in building important commercial and social infrastructure in Asia.

“We value the opportunity to contribute our key resources and expertise to safely and effectively deliver a project of this scale and complexity.”

The works include the design and construction of approximately 7.9km of sewer tunnels, each with an internal diameter of six metres, as well as shafts, hydraulic structures and other facilities associated with the sewage conveyance system.

The Deep Tunnel Sewerage System utilises large, deep tunnels to convey used water to centralised water reclamation plants for further treatment. With Phase 1 of the project completed in 2008, Phase 2 will be delivered via a number of works packages to eventually complete 40km of deep tunnels and 60km of link sewers, along with associated hydraulic structures and air management facilities.

This is the second PUB contract award for CIMIC Group this year, with UGL securing a contract in March for process upgrades, equipment replacement and maintenance services at the Woodleigh Waterworks treatment plant in the central area of Singapore.

If you do take your family with you, it is important to decide between joining the local school system or choosing an international school.
