STRABAG to build € 212m singing road in Hungary

STRABAG has been awarded the contract to build and widen the R 67 expressway in Hungary. The € 212 million project is being carried out by a consortium in which STRABAG holds 53.2 %. Of the 33 km of expressway between Kaposfüred and Látrány in southwestern Hungary, STRABAG is in charge of the new construction of a 10.3 km section as well as the renovation and widening of a further 10.1 km.

“Musical” asphalt surface
The expressway will have a unique feature when completed: cars driving at the prescribed speed over a certain section of the road will create the melody to the song “67-es út” (“Route 67”) by Hungarian rock band Republic. This is possible because of special grooves in the roadway: thanks to the right spacing and depth, a melody is produced by car wheels rolling over the grooves.

“This project shows how much creativity there can be in transportation infrastructures. We are delighted to be able to realise this interesting project for Hungary’s national infrastructure company,” says Thomas Birtel, CEO of STRABAG SE.

New category of expressway
Hungary’s so-called R roads (“R” stands for “rapid”) are part of a new road construction strategy by the Hungarian government. These roads generally have a speed limit of 110 km/h with two lanes in each direction separated by a median divider.

Will your partner be travelling with you?

If so, what will they be giving up in your present home and will they be able to continue with their career in your new home? You will need to check whether a separate visa is required for your partner to work or if your visa gives that right. If they are unable to work you will need to decide on the effect on your finances and what alternatives are available to give a fulfilling life (home business, training, voluntary work).

Are you taking family with you?

Moving with family raises many exciting opportunities, but also can create challenges. The HSBC Expat Explorer survey indicates that expat kids can take six months to settle in to their new country (see article). Getting young or even older children to prepare to move and leave their friends and family behind can be a challenge and should be thought through.

The options for education is another area that needs to be thought through.

Moving your child to a new country with a different education system can be a great opportunity to broaden their experience, but if they are close to key exams the timing can make this inadvisable. If you do take your family with you, it is important to decide between joining the local school system or choosing an international school.
