Pöyry awarded contract for wastewater plant in Finland
Pöyry awarded detailed engineering assignments for Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant in Finland.
Helsinki Region Environmental Services (HSY) has awarded Pöyry detailed engineering assignments for the Blominmäki wastewater treatment plant to be built in Espoo, Finland. The assignments include the structural and architectural design of the treatment plant, electrical, instrumentation and automation design, area planning, and the geotechnical engineering of aboveground structures.
The Blominmäki treatment plant will replace the Suomenoja treatment plant once completed in 2020, and it will treat the wastewater of 400,000 residents. The Blominmäki treatment plant will be built mainly underground in caverns excavated into bedrock, and the excavation project is already in progress. Pöyry has prepared rock mechanics and geotechnical designs for the facility at an earlier stage of the project. Design processes under the new assignments started in March 2016.
“Our cooperation with Pöyry regarding the bedrock and geotechnical design in Blominmäki has proceeded well as in our previous assignments. The bedrock design process continues, with excellent cooperation between the designer, client, contractor and CM consultant. This is why we have high expectations for the detailed engineering of Blominmäki,” says Jukka Yli-Kuivila, Project Director for the treatment plant project from HSY.
“We are happy to have the opportunity to utilise our design and project expertise on a larger scale in the Blominmäki treatment plant project. Pöyry has extensive expertise in building and infrastructure engineering and water management, and these fields also supplement one another in this project,” say Pekka Narinen, President, Pöyry’s building and structural design unit, and Kari Aalto, President, local industry project services in southern Finland.
“The plant will be designed to be as energy self-sufficient as possible. The digestion of waste sludge produces gas for the production of power and heat. Self-sufficiency is also supported by solar panels, smart lighting solutions and the energy-efficient power supply system. Our electrical, instrumentation and automation design ensures that the different systems work seamlessly together,” says Kari Aalto.
The value of the order is not disclosed. The order was recognised in the Regional Operations order stock in Q1 2016.
