Hill lands €960m German construction work

Hill International, the global leader in managing construction risk, announced today that it has received a contract from Unibail-Rodamco to provide project management and site supervision services in connection with the Überseequartier Süd mixed-use development in Hamburg, Germany.

The €960 million ($1.02 billion) Überseequartier Süd development will be the centerpiece of HafenCity in Hamburg, the second largest city in Germany. With 3.5 million residents within an hour’s driving time, HafenCity is considered to be one of the largest urban redevelopment projects in Europe with a land mass of approximately 2.2 square kilometers (0.85 square miles).

The Überseequartier Süd development will comprise 14 iconic buildings including 1150 hotel rooms, residential, entertainment and office facilities. It will also feature a cruise terminal, a below grade light rail metro and, an interconnected retail space with 200 stores. All buildings will be Gold BREEAM certified, the European standard for sustainable building.

“This is one of the largest developments in Europe and a landmark project in Germany,” said Jeffrey Sújar Blanco, Vice President with Hill’s Project Management Group. “We are extremely excited to be part of such an iconic project,” added Sújar.

Hill International, with 4,300 professionals in 100 offices worldwide, provides program management, project management, construction management, construction claims and other consulting services primarily to the buildings, transportation, environmental, energy and industrial markets. Engineering News-Record magazine recently ranked Hill as the eighth largest construction management firm in the United States.

Initial Considerations

Will your partner be travelling with you?

If so, what will they be giving up in your present home and will they be able to continue with their career in your new home? You will need to check whether a separate visa is required for your partner to work or if your visa gives that right. If they are unable to work you will need to decide on the effect on your finances and what alternatives are available to give a fulfilling life (home business, training, voluntary work).

Are you taking family with you?

Moving with family raises many exciting opportunities, but also can create challenges. The HSBC Expat Explorer survey indicates that expat kids can take six months to settle in to their new country (see article). Getting young or even older children to prepare to move and leave their friends and family behind can be a challenge and should be thought through.

The options for education is another area that needs to be thought through.

Moving your child to a new country with a different education system can be a great opportunity to broaden their experience, but if they are close to key exams the timing can make this inadvisable. If you do take your family with you, it is important to decide between joining the local school system or choosing an international school.

Where will you be living?

Whether you will be living in a house or apartment, furnished or unfurnished, these decisions will affect what you need to take with you.
