McDermott awarded Aramco EPCI contract

McDermott International, Inc. has announced that it has been awarded a large brownfield contract by Saudi Aramco for the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) of twelve jackets for offshore oil and gas fields in Saudi Arabian waters. The work is scheduled for completion by the end of the first quarter of 2016 and will be included in McDermott’s second quarter backlog for 2015.

This is the second award McDermott has received in 2015 from Saudi Aramco and represents work scope bid under an existing Long-Term Agreement. In March 2015, the client awarded McDermott a brownfield contract for a power supply system replacement that utilizes McDermott’s full EPCI expertise.

“The project called for an extremely responsive bid phase and for fast-track execution,” said Tom Mackie, McDermott’s Vice President, Middle East. “Our ability to provide schedule certainty — through the provision of integrated EPCI services combined with the right technical solution to meet the challenging time constraints — was key to winning the project.”

Engineering and procurement is expected to be performed by McDermott’s teams in Dubai, U.A.E., and Al Khobar, Saudi Arabia. The jackets are scheduled for fabrication by McDermott’s Dubai, U.A.E.-based fabrication facility. Vessels from the McDermott global fleet are scheduled to undertake the installation work.

Will your partner be travelling with you?

If so, what will they be giving up in your present home and will they be able to continue with their career in your new home? You will need to check whether a separate visa is required for your partner to work or if your visa gives that right. If they are unable to work you will need to decide on the effect on your finances and what alternatives are available to give a fulfilling life (home business, training, voluntary work).

Are you taking family with you?

Moving with family raises many exciting opportunities, but also can create challenges. The HSBC Expat Explorer survey indicates that expat kids can take six months to settle in to their new country (see article). Getting young or even older children to prepare to move and leave their friends and family behind can be a challenge and should be thought through.

The options for education is another area that needs to be thought through.

Moving your child to a new country with a different education system can be a great opportunity to broaden their experience, but if they are close to key exams the timing can make this inadvisable. If you do take your family with you, it is important to decide between joining the local school system or choosing an international school.
