French wins €440m Cairo metro contract

French consortium wins €440m Cairo metro contract. A consortium of firms including Vinci and Bouygues has landed €440m (£320m) worth of contracts to deliver Phase 4A of the third metro line of Cairo metro.

Work will be carried out by a consortium of Vinci, Bouygues, Alstom, Thales, Colas and Eurovia in a consortium with Egyptian companies Orascom and Arab Contractors.

The new phase will include five stations and under this phase, the metro line will be extended 5.7km from Haroun station in Heliopolis to Al-Nozha 1.

A consortium of Vinci and Bouygues will deliver civil works on the five-station extension, which is slated to open in early 2018.

Thales and Alstom will be responsible for signalling, train control, and telecommunications will be provided by Thales, while Alstom will supply its Urbalis 200 signalling system, points machines, as well as station signalling equipment.

A consortium of Colas Rail, Orascom, and Arabco will deliver infrastructure work. Alstom will be responsible for delivering power supplies, electromechanical equipment and ventilation systems.

According to a statement from the French Ministry of Foreign Affairs & International Development, “This major achievement in the area of French-Egyptian cooperation, the previous phases of which received financial support from the French government and European co-financing, will benefit almost four million passengers every day.”
