Switching On Your Phone Abroad Could Cost You £100s When Visiting These Countries

With Google searches for ‘working holidays abroad’ surging over 853% compared to this time last year, more Brits than ever are planning a summer of work and wandering. But while the idea of earning while you explore is appealing, Global Work & Travel is warning travellers not to let unexpected mobile phone charges ruin the experience.

Jessie Chambers, spokesperson for Global Work & Travel, says:

“Even something as simple as switching on your phone when you land can lead to huge roaming bills, especially if you haven’t changed your settings. A few background apps using data without you realising can cost you hundreds before you’ve even unpacked.”

Since the UK left the EU, roaming charges have returned in full force for many travellers. Without an EU cap in place, UK mobile networks can now set their own fees, and some are charging as much as £7.75 per MB. For travellers working abroad over summer, that adds up fast.

What could that actually cost you? Here’s a breakdown:

  • Sending a short video on WhatsApp (5MB):  £38.75 at £7.75 per MB
  • Posting an Instagram story with video (8MB):  £62
  • Using Google Maps for an hour (approx. 20MB):  £155
  • iCloud or Google Photos auto-backup (can use 100MB+): £775+ if roaming is left on by mistake

These figures are based on the highest rates charged by UK providers in destinations not covered by inclusive roaming. Exact charges depend on your network and location.

Top destinations with high roaming risks include:

  • Switzerland – not covered by EU roaming deals
  • Turkey – often classed outside “Europe” zones by UK networks.
  • USA, Canada – where roaming passes can be costly, or non-existent.
  • North Africa – Morocco
  • South Africa, UAE, and parts of Latin America – known for eye-watering default rates.

In some cases, travellers have returned home to bills exceeding £1,000, simply for leaving data switched on while working or travelling abroad.

Five Ways to Avoid a Roaming Disaster This Summer:

  1. Turn Off Data Roaming Before You Fly
Go into settings and disable roaming entirely. Don’t rely on airplane mode.
  2. Stick to Wi-Fi
Use trusted networks in cafes, hostels and accommodation. Avoid open public networks where possible.
  3. Use a Local SIM or eSIM
A prepaid SIM or an eSIM from providers like Airalo or Holafly can massively cut costs, especially for longer stays.
  4. Check Your Network’s Add-On Options
Some UK networks offer travel passes or bolt-ons, check whether yours includes the country you’re heading to.
  5. Track Your Usage
Use apps like Revolut or built-in mobile data monitors to keep control of your daily usage.

Jessie Chambers, Spokesperson for Global Work & Travel says:

“If you’re heading abroad for a working holiday, your phone will be your lifeline, for maps, communication, job alerts, even clocking in. It’s worth spending five minutes before you leave to make sure it won’t also be your biggest expense.”
