I have worked in engineering for more than 11 years and have built up a wealth of knowledge and experience. My first position was with SPP Pumps where I gained the bulk of my experience and knowledge. SPP is a world leader in the design and manufacture of pumps and fluid movement/management systems. I joined the company as an apprentice and during my training I gained many qualifications and much valuable practical experience. I have worked in many aspects of the business during my apprenticeship from design engineering, product development, test engineering and rigging through to production and manufacture. Therefore, I developed a broad understanding of the operation of the whole company. My job involved me liaising between a wide range of departments and required me to develop and use communication and management skills. As my skills and knowledge developed through my career, I was able to take control of project related data and documentation, including full job specifications and costing approval to HSE requirements while complying with strict company standards.

The most enriching experience is my time spent in Sierra Leone as it taught me many things about myself. I am able to supervise/manage people and I am able to plan and organise operations in an accurate and efficient manner in order for local people to understand and undertake set tasks. When working and living in the jungle I have learnt to be resilient, self-reliant and work with a level of autonomy whilst dealing with many other factors like cultural differences, language barriers and difficult working conditions. Before accepting my position in SL I was offered and declined a Project Engineer’s role at Astrium a front runner in the European space industry.
