I studied Refrigeration and Steam in the Royal Engineers progressing to installation, project management and teaching. On leaving the Army I worked in Building Services management for a hotel group overseas, returning to service management positions in large building service companies in the UK before once again returning overseas to Saudi Arabia for facilities engineering within hospitals; moving on to Consulting in Facilities Management to 71 hospitals in Malaysia, before being transferred to Libya for Tripoli Medical Centre, Vamed HQ in Wien, Al Ain Hospital in UAE onto QSMC Bangkok, FM assistance in PCMC, preparing tenders and training in Kuala Lumpur back to Vienna and on to UAE.

In my last position I was a Senior Consultant for Vamed Management und Service (VMS) working in & from the VMS UAE office working with the Dar Al Shifaa Hospitals in Khalifa City, Al Najdah and Clinic in Dalma Mall Abu Dhabi to facilitate the safe opening of the Khalifa City hospital and correct operation of Al Najdah hospital and Dalma Clinic. Ensuring the buildings and engineering services meet the required engineering standards and specifications. Commissioning is carried out correctly, with emphases on the Mechanical, Electrical & Plumbing services, but also the Biomedical equipment. Working in the UAE branch office preparing tender submissions for Hospital/Healthcare Engineering Projects, Healthcare Facility Engineering and Management, within UAE and the Middle and Far East. Recently tendering for Healthcare Facility Management and Hospital/Healthcare Engineering contracts in UK and Europe and customising our Computer Aided Facility Management (CAFM) system for use within the company’s projects worldwide. Even though I am not a fluent German speaker I am often called upon to translate German to English documents etc. especially involving engineering terms.

Advising and assisting the Vamed Management of Al Ain Hospital, during the takeover of the hospital on all aspects of Hospital/Healthcare Engineering and facilities management. Initially leading an asset register pick up exercise during which I carried out a survey of the hospital infrastructure reporting on this and recommending improvements. On these recommendations I project managed the refurbishment of the CSSD, ICU, OPCs, L&D and A&E and construction of a new Operating Theatre suite. Also tasked to standardise regulate and improve the service provision of the engineering, cleansing and laundry services, reporting on existing service provision and recommending improvements. Remaining on site to train the local Facility Management and the support services to provide the improved services and assisting in the installation of a CAFM.

Consulting and advisory services in the field of Hospital/Healthcare Engineering and Facilities Management, the primary responsibility being advising and troubleshooting Healthcare Facilities Management and Healthcare Engineering. Also preparing, assisting and monitoring the implementation of Quality Assurance to ISO 9000:2000 standards in hospitals mainly within the South East Asian region, but also some in Europe and North Africa. Participated in the writing of the Healthcare Facility Managers Handbooks particularly on Facilities Engineering Management Services, Air Conditioning, ISO and Benchmarking. Carried out Benchmarking in the 71 hospitals in Malaysia and was the focal point for the Vamed Group for the compilation of benchmarking worldwide. Assisted in the take over of the hospital support services by our client, involved in every aspect of staffing, costing, contracts, training, logistics, writing procedures, job descriptions, work instructions etc.
The Primary Client of the company in Malaysia was Faber Medi-Serve Sdn Bhd who holds the MOH concession for the privatisation of five (5) support services namely Biomedical Engineering Maintenance Services, Facility Engineering Maintenance Services, Laundry and Linen, Cleansing services and Clinical Waste Management Services for 71 government hospitals. Travelled to the regional offices to provide hands on assistance when FMS took over/integrated all approximately 7000 of the subcontracting staff.
