Which Country Has More Oil Than Saudi Arabia?
A new independent estimate of world oil reserves has been released, showing that the US now holds more recoverable oil reserves than both Saudi Arabia and Russia. For the US, more than 50% of remaining oil reserves is unconventional shale oil. Texas alone holds more than 60 billion barrels of shale oil, according to new data from Rystad Energy.

New travel cover has been devised for the internationally mobile and expats worldwide, based on a familiar UK model. This ‘UK style’ international travel insurance is available for individuals, families and groups of expats and international citizens travelling on leisure or business from virtually ‘anywhere to anywhere’.

New Expat Mortgage Scheme Launched
An owner-occupier mortgage for UK nationals working abroad has been launched by a building society. The mortgage is available on an interest-only basis and borrowers will need to have an acceptable repayment strategy using UK-based sterling assets.

Health Cover For Contractors
Policies from international insurance broker Bellwood Prestbury now offer contractors the option of taking out health cover for periods of three, six, nine or 12 months, rather than always having to take out annually-renewable policies. All International Contractors Plan policies are renewable and may be extended without re-underwriting, subject to there being no break in cover.

Keep Your UK Mobile Number While Abroad?
Roaming and international call charges can be avoided by expats using a new service
which allows you to keep your UK mobile number. A UK-based start-up providing multiple mobile numbers on an existing mobile phone has said that people in 130 countries now have UK mobile numbers thanks to its app.

Best Savings Rates In Expat Banking
Beware that the rates quoted here may fall, as UK official base rate has dropped 0.25% to 0.25%, a record low.
The best offering for sterling offshore savers is Skipton International’s 1.4%, if you have £10,000 and can give 180 days’ notice of withdrawals. For dollars, Standard Bank pays 1% for $10,000 or more, with 196 days’ notice. Nationwide International is best for euros, paying 0.65% for €25,000 or more, with instant access.
If you want a monthly income from your offshore savings, the best offer currently comes from Skipton International. If you can give 180 days’ notice of withdrawals on a minimum deposit of £10,000, then an annual equivalent rate of 1.4% is paid monthly.
